An "external" probe head is one that is implemented externally to the machine controller and externally to the particular machine interface. Since the machine controller and interface are not aware of the communications capability of the probe head the PC-DMIS application must communicate to the probe head separately through an additional comm port. The external probe head support is therefore implemented in a generic manner inside PC-DMIS and is not dependent on any particular machine interface.
